Backpack Size & Capacity Guide: Liters, Laptop Sleeves and Carry-On Rules

How backpack liters are measured

Backpack volume in liters describes internal carrying space. In factory specifications, volume usually includes the closed main compartment and any secondary compartments that are fully enclosed. Open stretch pockets and external water bottle sleeves are often excluded unless the specification states otherwise. Sourcing buyers should confirm whether the listed liters refer to the main compartment only or to total internal volume, because this changes the perceived size for the same external footprint.

A useful reference set for Camytonc capacity planning covers three classes: 10-20L daypacks, 20-35L commuter and travel bags, and 35L+ expedition bags. These classes guide material, panel, laptop sleeve and zipper decisions before a sample is made.

Capacity classes and use cases

Choose the capacity class first. It sets reasonable expectations for daily load, laptop size and carry-on use. The table below maps the three verified classes to common buying situations.

Capacity classTypical use casesLaptop sleeve reference
10-20L daypacksDaily commutes, light school days, personal item travel, short errands13 inch sleeve, 30 x 22 x 8 cm, supports compact carry
20-35L commuter and travelOffice commutes with tech and a change of clothes, two to three day travel, university carry15 inch sleeve, 35 x 25 x 10 cm, or 17 inch sleeve, 40 x 30 x 12 cm
35L+ expeditionMulti-day travel, gear-heavy roles, outdoor use, school with sports equipment17 inch sleeve, 40 x 30 x 12 cm, only when the design includes a large padded compartment

For school buyers, the school backpacks category is a practical starting point. Do not assume a 20L bag fits the same as another 20L bag. External dimensions, panel depth and sleeve placement change the usable space.

Laptop compartment fit rules

Screen size alone is not enough for a fit decision. A 15 inch laptop from one maker can have a larger footprint than a 15 inch laptop from another. Compare the device dimensions, including any protective case, against the sleeve interior dimensions.

Laptop sleeve sizeVerified sleeve dimensionsFit rule for buyers
13 inch30 x 22 x 8 cmUse for slim devices with total device and case depth below 8 cm, with side clearance for easy insertion
15 inch35 x 25 x 10 cmUse for mainstream 15 inch devices, confirm device and case dimensions fall below 35 x 25 x 10 cm
17 inch40 x 30 x 12 cmUse for large workstation-class devices, confirm the device width and depth before selecting this sleeve

For OEM buyers, a safe rule is simple: the laptop sleeve interior must be larger than the device plus its case, not just equal to the screen dimensions. If the client sells a 13 inch backpack with a 30 x 22 x 8 cm sleeve, request the maximum device dimensions the buyer wants to support. Then hold the sample to that dimension with a physical fit test. See the laptop backpacks category for designs built around these sleeve sizes.

Carry-on compliance and IATA guideline

The IATA carry-on guideline is 40 x 30 x 20 cm. That is a reference dimension, not a binding airline rule. Carriers set their own limits by route, fare class and aircraft type. A bag that meets the IATA guideline may still be refused by a budget airline with a smaller limit, and a bag slightly over may be accepted on a full-service carrier.

IATA guideline: 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Airline rules vary. Always check the operating carrier before production or before travel.

For buyers who want a carry-on-first travel backpack, external dimensions must be checked against the carrier limit while the bag is empty, not loaded. A filled bag changes depth. The BB-4502 is an IATA-friendly reference in the travel backpack range. Review the travel backpacks category for additional options and confirm current airline limits with the target market.

Kids sizing considerations

Camytonc does not market a dedicated stock children's backpack line. OEM buyers who need kids sizes can specify custom dimensions as part of a made-to-order program. This means the buyer controls the height, width, depth, strap spacing and sleeve placement for a smaller frame, instead of forcing an adult 10-20L or 20-35L pattern onto a child.

For kid-specific sourcing, treat the capacity classes as a starting point but not as a fit guide. A 10-20L bag may still be too tall for a small child if the back panel length is not shortened. Include exact external dimensions and back length in the purchase specification, and request a fitted sample before bulk production.

Sizing spec checklist for OEM buyers

Use this checklist to align factory quotes, samples and bulk production. Each line is tied to a verified parameter from the Camytonc program.

  • Capacity class target: 10-20L, 20-35L or 35L+.
  • Main compartment dimensions: state length, width and depth in centimeters, not liters alone.
  • Laptop sleeve: choose 13 inch, 15 inch or 17 inch with verified sleeve dimensions of 30 x 22 x 8 cm, 35 x 25 x 10 cm or 40 x 30 x 12 cm.
  • Carry-on requirement: if the bag must meet the IATA 40 x 30 x 20 cm guideline, state empty bag dimensions and the target airline.
  • Fabric spec: nylon 110-160 g/m2, nylon 180-220 g/m2 as 420D, nylon 240-280 g/m2 as 600D, polyester 190T, 210T, 300T, 600D or 1200D, canvas 8 oz, 10 oz, 12 oz or 15 oz, or rPET.
  • Waterproofing: PU or PVC coating 3000 mm+ or TPU lamination 10,000 mm+.
  • Logo method and MOQ: base or embroidered 500 pcs, special fabrics 1000 pcs. Woven label about 300, metal plate about 200, heat-press PVC about 500, laser about 100, reflective about 1000, hidden about 50, interchangeable about 1000.
  • Sample and bulk timing: samples 1-10 days paid, revision 2-3 days, bulk 15-20 days standard, 25-30 days for over 10,000 units or complex builds.
  • Factory certifications to verify: amfori BSCI, ISO 9001, SGS, TUV, GRS.
  • Packaging: poly bag, color box, gift box with handle bag, branded poly mailer, hang tag with poly bag, or dust bag.

For buyers who need a custom size outside the listed laptop sleeve range, the OEM process page explains how specifications move through pattern, sample and bulk stages. Send a complete spec sheet with external dimensions, sleeve dimensions, capacity class, fabric and logo MOQ to avoid quote delays.

Source the right backpack size

Size is the earliest failure point in backpack sourcing. A buyer who locks the capacity class, laptop sleeve and carry-on dimensions before sampling reduces revision loops and avoids returns. Review the travel backpacks category for carry-on-ready builds, and send your dimension sheet through the contact page or to [email protected]. Camytonc teams respond within 24 hours on sizing, MOQ and sample questions.
